Inquiry Journeys is based on the College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) Framework for Social Studies and inquirED’s Inquiry Skills Standards. Inquiry Journeys also aligns to the Common Core English Language Arts Anchor Standards (CCSSELA) and the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) competencies. Read the descriptions below to find out more.
College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) Framework for Social Studies
- The result of a three-year state-led collaborative effort, the College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) Framework for Social Studies State Standards was developed to serve two audiences: for states to upgrade their state social studies standards, and for practitioners—local school districts, schools, teachers, and curriculum writers—to strengthen their social studies programs. Its objectives are to (1) enhance the rigor of the social studies disciplines, (2) build the critical thinking, problem-solving, and participatory skills necessary for students to become engaged citizens, and (3) align academic programs to the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy in History/Social Studies. (“C3 Framework.” National Council for the Social Studies, National Council for the Social Studies, 10 Dec. 2019, www.socialstudies.org/c3.)
inquirED’s Inquiry Skills Standards
- inquirED’s Inquiry Skills Standards define the core skills students practice in inquiry-based learning, which set them up for success in school, work, life, and civic participation. These skills include Collaboration, Creative Problem Solving, Personal Agency, Communication, and Critical Thinking.
Common Core English Language Arts Anchor Standards
- The College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards form the backbone of the ELA/literacy standards by articulating core knowledge and skills, while grade-specific standards provide additional specificity. The skills and knowledge captured in the ELA/literacy standards are designed to prepare students for life outside the classroom. They include critical-thinking skills and the ability to closely and attentively read texts in a way that will help them understand and enjoy complex works of literature. Students will learn to use cogent reasoning and evidence collection skills that are essential for success in college, career, and life. The standards also lay out a vision of what it means to be a literate person who is prepared for success in the 21st century. The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) competencies
- Social and emotional learning (SEL) helps students to understand and regulate their behaviors, gives them the tools to thrive in their interactions with others, and develops their capacity to set and work toward goals. The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) has developed a set of core SEL competencies that identify targeted intrapersonal, interpersonal, and cognitive skills and abilities. Inquiry Journeys consciously develops these core competencies across grade levels. (www.casel.org)
